![]() I could sit here and point out all the stupid moves the characters make but why bother? Thrillers like When the Bough Breaks depend on characters that make stupid mistakes and bad choices like allowing strangers into their homes and/or lives. When you see that Laura has a pet cat, you know instinctively it’s days are numbered. The story isn’t as tight as it should be. The writing and directing, on the other hand, leave something to be desired. It’s a slick, polished production populated by attractive people who live in upscale homes (except for Mike). If you’ve ever seen Fatal Attraction or any of its many imitators, nothing in When the Bough Breaks will come as a surprise.Īs a thriller, When the Bough Breaks is just okay. Yes, she’s wacko! It breaks down like this. Yes, Anna has a past that includes foster homes, sexual assault and a stint in a mental institution. Yes, Anna’s altruism is an act she and Mike are pulling a scam. The trailer pretty much tells the whole story. They couldn’t do that with When the Bough Breaks because there’s nothing to give away. ![]() Screen Gems tried that with No Good Deed and the so-called twist turned out to be arbitrary at best and ludicrous at worst. Sometimes when a studio declines to screen a thriller, they claim it’s because they don’t want people giving away crucial plot twists or spoiling surprise endings. Basically, she loses it and makes the Taylors’ lives a living hell. She threatens to keep the baby for herself. She starts sabotaging their perfect lives, causing John trouble at work (he’s a lawyer). He’s arrested and ordered to stay away from Anna who’s been invited to stay in the Taylor’s guest house for the duration of her pregnancy.Īs expected, Anna develops a crush on John who doesn’t reciprocate her feelings. ![]() The trouble begins when Anna’s boyfriend Mike (Rossi, Sons of Anarchy) assaults her. The Taylors select her and she’s impregnated with Laura’s last embryo. Enter Anna (Sinclair, Paper Towns), a seemingly innocent young girl that claims to want to help childless couples start families. She’s had three miscarriages so they decide to hire a surrogate to carry their child. Young professional couple John (Chestnut, The Perfect Guy) and Laura Taylor (Hall, Think Like a Man) want to have a baby. While I wouldn’t go so far as to stay it stinks, When the Bough Breaks is little more than a glorified made-for-Lifetime suspense-thriller. It’s the second release this weekend (the other being The Disappointments Room) that didn’t even have a night-before showing, something that’s become the norm for all new titles. Like its two predecessors, Screen Gems didn’t screen it beforehand. It can hardly be considered a victory though. The only real difference is that When the Bough Breaks is mediocre making it the best of the three. Has Screen Gems officially reserved this weekend for such movies? Last year, it was The Perfect Guy. When the Bough Breaks is exactly what I thought it would be, a lame knock-off of The Crush and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle with a black cast.
